I keep on giving compression wear, a thought. (to ease pains in my legs etc..)
In my thirties now. Post workout I feel a lot of aches and pains in the muscles after exercise. I think these would possibly help recovery in people over 30.
( in teens and early twenties I never hurt).
I'm thinking post workout to keep swelling down .. (maybe with a proper warm down too)
Just wondering what the consensus is on them..., and what ones to buy there's so many and different brands and different materials and I'm confused..
How do you know what ones to wear post workout... Im guessing more compression post workout? so its down to getting the size right....
I've been using the Canterbury compression stuff for the last 2 years and cannot fault it in any way.. keeps you toasty warm in winter and cool in summer...
Don't really know much about its use in post workout recovery and all that.. I just wear it on the bike and take it off when I get home..!?!
Personally before I would resort to wearing spacesuits or whatever the yokes are I would make sure I was doing everything possible to aid recovery such as the following:
1. Having a good enough level of fitness to aid recovery, the fitter you are the quicker you recover.
2. Hydrating enough before going out on the bike and then replacing what you lost as soon as possible after your ride, about 6 pints of Mi Wadi usually does the trick after a good spin, although dilute it a good bit apparently the more watery it is the quicker the body absorbs it.
3. Getting a good bit of food in after the ride.
4. Having the bike set up properly so you are not causing yourself extra fatigue with bad technique / set up.
5. There is also not much a good jacuzi and a sauna followed by some cold plunge pools cannot cure.
I like to wear tight jeans after a spin - much like the lovely fellah below
though seriously, not sure if the compression wear would resolve your muscular aches, some of the stuff - especially the Skins and Under Armor is very expensive, and I'm not sure they are worth it
I use the Under Armor compression long-shorts after races when driving back a long distance they seem to help
a cheaper and more effective (and ball-shrinking) option after a spin, is to sit in a cool bath after intense excercise to relieve your muscles
I also gullup-down a protein and carb shake which definitely helps
spinning your legs after a spin (low resistance/low gears) also helps relieve the tension in your leg muscles, also try stretching afterwards
I heard that the Skins tights were very good too for post workout. Also try drop into a really easy gear and spin a high revs towards the end of a cycle, they all do a similar job to the alternating hot & cold shower.
Finally (and this isn't a joke), get a rolling pin for getting the knots out of your muscles. Roll the pin back and forward along each muscle and when you find somewhere thats really sore keep the pressure on it for about a minute and start again with the full muscle. The more sore spots you've found the more knots you had...
lookat yer man in the vest eyeing-up the other fellahs grapes, and I'm not talking about the grapes in his shopping bag neither.....
Nice pic of ya there. looking well.
yeah it take me usually 40 mins to an hour to get home that's why I was thinking of compression pants, by the time I get home my legs feel like concrete. After seeing that pic I'm going to get a denim pair like you have very nice.
Yeah, I've got the foam roller really cheap from a Physio store in Ringsend (apparently its usually an expensive store but it was a quarter of the price of most places when I was looking fot that). Anyhoo, the foam roller works great for certain places but its very difficult to use for the backs of the legs as you're trying too suspend almost all you weight on your arms and push/pull your body back and forward... not practical.
I have a book if you're interested on such techniques.
Yeah, but I'm thinking maybe I could just get a lend of those pants, and then stand on the corner of dame street and use the book as a prop to look like I'm reading it, but really I'm showing off your pants. I could wear a compression vest too, but maybe that might be too much.
Ronan..
theres no harm in the Compression gear, I use the 2xu stuff when I think of it and it seems to work alright.
However, its really designed for people doing absolutely savage miles.
Like triathletes and people training for Ironman contests.
I think you're dehydrated.
But then I'm a Coach unlike the other nutjobs with their rude pictures and offers of books.
Try drinking more water or a Protein shake like the Dethpants lad recommended..
thats an horrific picture, Fergal !!
