Designated mtb trails

Guys,

I am doing something relating to new designated mountain bike trails at work and am after what people think is important with any new designated mountain bike trail be it the trail or facilities If you could post your ideas I would be grateful.

Thanks

Not really rocket science is this? Sounds like I'm describing Ballyhoura...except their showers were too cold.
Thanks Don,

I was hoping for a few more views but I guess you summed it up in one post...

I'll get trail named after you, whoops did I let that slip.....!
Bollox to that, it needs to have the Gnar man, and loads of it. None of that middle class responsible eco loving solar powered vegetarian ****e, make it deadly to the max. You want to have to pick the dead flies out of your nose with twisters. You want every filling you ever had to rattled out, you want that ‘I can’t believe I’m still alive, man’ feeling at the bottom of every section. You want it to run red with the blood of failure. You want mere mortals to fall to their knees in a puddle of their own urine at the very sight of it. A track where real men can be heroes and the weak wilt and blow away.

Who the fcuk wants to but a moca chino after surviving the most terrifying adrenalin rush they ever experienced. Showers are only for weak sissy men who have been beaten down by society and are slaves to their women. Rejoice in your man smell. Leave your bike dirty, its supposed to be covered in ****e, thats what its for. Way markers?, trail maps?, FFS find your own path man, follow your sole, don’t go where the ‘man’ tells you.
Gnar is a great word, I agree with Sean about the Gnar.

Jack, assorted bike brushes would be good too, especially those thin ones for between the hub and rotor.
As long as it starts and finishes in Rosenallis it will be brilliant.
Just copy+paste one of the bigger trail centres from Wales/Scotland.
It would be great to see some more techy lines or sections alongside the goober easy lines. For example, trail splitting in two for about 20 meters with a drop in one and a chicken line in the other, properly marked of course.
Ballyhoura is ok but I think its not challenging enough for better riders. The new 3rock trail is nice although more gnar would be welcome (as described above by Sean).
no walkers
no dogs
no kids
safe parking

well marked trails so bikers can find them/name them easily and there is no confusion and so any accidental people walking by know what theyre doing when entering / crossing the trail.

legal information for walkers that when they enter trails they agree with possibility of being injured, killed, cursed and that they can be prosecuted for inproper use of trails if they (or their dogs, cats, hamsters, whatever they bring along) cause injury/damage to the riders or their bikes.
  • Safe parking and lots of it
  • I like Max's idea about a choice of lines
  • good markings so that you can have crazy lines without people wandering onto them by mistake
Mum? Is that you Mum? Or are there some other gang of ol’ ones disguised as mountain bikers?

I am being unfair, I think we should have animal plasters in boxes on every corner in case we fall off and get and ‘ouey’, a bold step in the car park for anyone got in our way and made us fall off. Feck sake lads, ye sound like the feckin red socks that have been giving out to me for riding my bike for the last 20 years. Harden the fcuk up. Let them walk where they like, and their kids and the dogs and sexy mommies. We are supposed to be the reckless extreme gnarly lads who can handle what ever the trail throws up. You lot sound like you’ve been neutered. Ride what ever lines present themselves, be at piece with pedestrians and domesticated pets, live on the edge, go commando, ride her sideways, etc , etc etc.

This place has really gone to the dogs since mbtdaveland got sucked into a vortex.

Ive seen this in Scotland. They are graded like ski runs and every so often, there will bo two sections for a short piece of trail. The regular trail and the black trail section(most difficult of the gradings).
I was going to post a middle-class answer, but after reading Sean's post, and after recently wiping out all my savings on a brmm brmm, I am now working/MTB-poverty class, so I can't afford any of those fancy coffees and the like
It really does have to be about the trail doesn't it?
What's the point in great facilities if the trail is limp?

Tarquin: "I had an awesome cappucino after the spin today, smooth & frothy with fairtrade chocolate on top"
Mr. Fairy "I had a demon-rad spin today, nearly killed my bike twice and frightened the living bejesus out of myself more than once"
I'd hate to be thought of as a Tarquin

It's the same thing about people saying you have to run an NPS thru a nice flat field so the mammies and babies will be happy, b*llox to that, I always thought an MTB race was about beating other lads on a killer trail that would eat you if you weren't good enough, but that's just me...
You'd be better off putting the facilities money into the trail, and even before that - trail planning, then maintaining the trail to keep it good and make it better, carpark would be needed alright, feck all the bells and whistles
I agree with Sean 100%... new trails are great in Three Rock... but if you were dropped into the middle of it and had to guess where you were well you could be in Ballyhoura, Ballinastoe or Three Rock.... Narrow fireroad is the term I would use to describe the trails.. Don't get me wrong.. great to get newbies into it..but would be good to have trails to challenge people at it a bit longer.

Fergal I think you're mixing up XC racing and DH racing... XC is about the racing... keep it fast, keep it flowy so riders can race each other and not the track. Lady Dixon by all accounts is a great example of what a XC race should be like... You only have to read people's comments after races to see this and see that what they enjoy is beating someone by two seconds that they were dicing with during the race... anyway this is very off topic....

Coffee shop would be nice... bike wash... somewhere to park where you car windows weren't smashed.... and Gnar trails to challenge even the seasoned rider... Ballinastoe is a great example of how not to do it... tracks get huge numbers out but from a business perspective they are really missing out...
look Mr Fairy - someone is actually agreeing with you, he must be a good friend of yours or something
well, I guess you'd know mtbireland, with a title like that and all the Irish XC races you've done recently, you'd definitely be an expert in my book, especially when you deem the new 3Rock trails "narrow fireroads" - shows an insight and depth of experience and knowledge the rest of us can merely hope to attain
Well to have facilities at the trailhead is a must I think, that way you can generate money to keep the trails maintained and extend the trails after time.

As for making them more technical, that's not necessarily the best option as that creates injury when the noobs are unleashed on the trail.
I think that the best way to do it is to make the trails basic and simple to a beginner, but the more seasoned rider will be able to spot lines and make it harder and more fun for themselves. For example, two rollers after each other are just two rollers to a beginner, but to the experienced rider are a double. Or to have corners that can be ridden slowly by a beginner but take a bit of skill for a good guy to ride them fast, without taking away from the flow of things.
The new 3rock trails are a great example of this, they're easy for the beginners yet full of natural jumps and doubles that more seasoned riders can spot and get some decent air on making the trail more difficult for themselves, half the time spent on that trail is spent in the air trying to gap from one rock to another.... the only way you can call that not-technical is if your too afraid to try and jump these things?!
