3rd bike... What to get!

Hey

I have two bikes at the moment, a spez Pitch and an 98 trek 6000. I use the Pitch for everything offroad and the trek with slicks on the road. I'll be keeping the Pitch as its a handy bike for pretty much everything off road.

I'm thinking i'd also like a hardtail for off road, for the likes of the Thurs club racing and general long xc spins. I'll probably use the pitch more then the hardtail and i cycle a very short distance to and from work daily (and home from the pub!), so i have two options....

Upgrade the 6000 for off road (not much to do actually, i'm thinking even the old 1998 RS Jett forks can stay) and buy a cheap racer/road type bike. Or keep the trek for the roads and buy something like a stumpjumper or rock hopper for off road.

Whats your thought? Is the trek 6000 up to it, have things moved on too much between 1998 and 2002 for it to compare to any modern XC hard tail?

Ok, i've put some more thought into it, i don't think turning the trek into an off road bike is a good idea.

Anyone got any suggestions on a good value fixed tail xc bike? Light but strong and will take a decent level of abuse?

That is a fine bicycle right there Simo..only ridden offroad a handful of times by a man who never crashes and who never gets dirty.

Humm, Composite... All my ventures with carbon have lead to expensive repairs, i'm fairly rough with stuff... Little out of my budget too... Was thinking less then 1500

How about a nice 223 and try your hand at some gravity-assisted only stuff?

youd need to drive a tractor over that giant to break it.I've been riding one for years and no problems

Seriously want to avoid this... Humm, need to think abit more about it... Oh and don't get me wrong, its a nice bike, but i think i'd be afraid of breaking it all the time...
