I would really like to see some sort of quantifiable reason why mountainbikers should be treated exactly the same way as somebody tearing around the Blanket bog on a Quad, MXer or 4x4.
I don't care what they say, theres no way in hell 4 or 5 responsible riders can be as damaging as 20 or 30 walkers.
I see a guy got a warning coming down the miners trail..which is easily 95% man made, between the huge fireroad, the sleepers ( coated in creosote and wrapped in rusty nails and chickenwire) cut stone and a 200 year old rocky track you could drive a tank down..
and that poor fecker was probably nailed by the Ranger in his own 4x4..
I can see how motorised vehicles can be construed as dangerous and damaging, theres obvious physical evidence that they are.
Plus the fact none of us want to ride in a bog or anything resembling a bog..
What am I missing ?

Yeah. I read that and reckoned we'd be targeted big time. Its easier for them to simply ban everything than work out who could get an exception. I think riding anywhere in the NP will be a big big risk from now on. And groups of more than 2 or 3 are likely to be particularly targeted.
I know where they (the conservationists, rangers etc) are coming from, and can see thier point of view. I just happen to think that they're being a bit short sighted and that they're missing another approach, which is to allow tightly controlled access, especially to the likes of the miner's track, and thereby retain some degree of controll over where off-roaders go. Hopefully with the likes of the minister in the background they might see the logic of that approach.
But bad times are a coming here, unfortunately. Back to the feckin forests again.

It looks like we will be going tactical from now on...old camo gear needs to be brought back..tape ferns and dock leafs to the stem and seat post...army green Giant Reigns will be the weapon of choice fitted with smoke bombs and heat deflectors, run flat tyres and sat-nav...and night riding with night vision glasses will be deadly.....
In all fairness, if the so called green party, the NPWS and other "concerned groups" are feeling that proactive regarding preservation of blanket bogs and all that good stuff then why the hell are the putting so much energy into this, should they not start focusing more time on the people causing the real damage to the up-lands of Ireland, that is of course the forestry services (Coillte) and the companies erecting the wind farms on the top of every boggy mountain in Ireland. The local authorities make the wind farm companies complete an Environmental Impact Statement for the project which is a step, however, it never identifies the bog slides that happen more often that you see on the news in these windfarms. So if the bog is disappearing into a river, casuing major fish kills, scaring the mountain then I think this needs attention......
Coillte are also let plant and fell trees as they see fit without taking in account the type of trees they are planting, the gradient of the area, the underlying bedrock structure, the effects of run-off following large scale felling, the effects this has on the acidity of the water in the streams which can cause fish kills, or at least fill off any fish spawn that is in the river.
Then of course there is the farmers, who are now complaining about the effects of recreational users are having on farming, they are very quick to forget about the times when they were happily taking the huge subsedies the EU were giving them to overgraze every mountain with sheep, the more sheep you had the more money you got.... so you put 250 sheep on the side of a mountain for a few weeks, believe me they will eat everything, expose the peat and guess where that ends up, yes, back don in the rivers and streams and the mountain is scared again.... Oh ya and the EU funded that type of environmentally destructive farming technique, clever or what....

What about power ranger bob, what powers does he have, what i mean to say what's to stop me from telling him 'where to go' if he decides to fine ? Or even giving a false name?
Make sure you have false plates on your car too. To be fair, he is just enforcing the rules, not making them. Unfortunatly we are recreational vehices, so we can be done. whatever about one or two people riding sensibly, 20 people coming down camenderry will get a severe wrap.

Maybe if we gather enough info showing how little impact we really have, and how we benefit the local economy, along with agreement not to ride certain areas, and to maintain trails etc. I know Sean has been in close contact with the powers that be for years now, and has a good idea of where we stand, so maybe we should look to him as to what to do.

Fair enough and I totally agree, but I still am unclear as to how a park ranger has the power to fine and even how he could give one, ie will he escort you back to your car and ask for a driving licence, I just don't see haw they can actually fine a biker on a mountain.

Then of course there is the farmers, who are now complaining about the effects of recreational users are having on farming, they are very quick to forget about the times when they were happily taking the huge subsedies the EU were giving them to overgraze every mountain with sheep, the more sheep you had the more money you got.... so you put 250 sheep on the side of a mountain for a few weeks, believe me they will eat everything, expose the peat and guess where that ends up, yes, back don in the rivers and streams and the mountain is scared again.... Oh ya and the EU funded that type of environmentally destructive farming technique, clever or what....
Now I am all for being 100% responsible when we are using the outdoors and have huge respect for the natural environment, in the winter I will spend more time on 3 rock for a good reason, you can ride trails which are stone/rock so not causing damage to the bog.
I have seen the damage that can be caused to the mountains, and mountain bikes are not the source of that damage.

Some studies from the Department of Conservation in New Zealand shows that bikes do no more damage than walkers or horses (and in fact walkers and horses cause more damage on downhill sections than bikes do)

Basically anywhere in Glendo is off limits....nobody on here rides down there anyway...its too far and its too hard..
besides the Miners trail on a Sunday or a Saturday is stupid..way too many Walkers and Bob just has to drive up and sit at the bottom..

What about power ranger bob, what powers does he have, what i mean to say what's to stop me from telling him 'where to go' if he decides to fine ? Or even giving a false name?
Make sure you have false plates on your car too. To be fair, he is just enforcing the rules, not making them. Unfortunatly we are recreational vehices, so we can be done. whatever about one or two people riding sensibly, 20 people coming down camenderry will get a severe wrap.

Maybe if we gather enough info showing how little impact we really have, and how we benefit the local economy, along with agreement not to ride certain areas, and to maintain trails etc. I know Sean has been in close contact with the powers that be for years now, and has a good idea of where we stand, so maybe we should look to him as to what to do.

Fair enough and I totally agree, but I still am unclear as to how a park ranger has the power to fine and even how he could give one, ie will he escort you back to your car and ask for a driving licence, I just don't see haw they can actually fine a biker on a mountain.
