RichartT - I've run this a couple of times before, and other times it hasn't been run at all. If you can't go that's one thing, but unless your prepared to host it, I'd be slow to criticize when it's on.
It's great to see it's been held again. More worrying is I'm eligible once again - I did my first one in 2002, ha, this had really better be my last one!

I'm criticizing it in the nicest possible manner, If I wasn't doing exams I'd be arranging a bus + trailer or something to travel from the Cork area to it, meaning more competitors and more fun.
I didn't mean to be mean in my original post, I was just making a comment as it could account for poor attendance, and maybe vinnie122 would take note for a future IV.
Fair play Vinnie, it's good to see the student interest is growing...although the TCD exams start that Monday so most of us probably have to miss them as well. We hosted a downhill intervarsities in last year, as in we piggybacked on the Winter League, but for xc the timing is trickier. What college are you from?
Looking forward to this. It'll be a short lap race so everybody can definitely manage it. Flat out yeoo!
now Vinnie asked for my help so this is not a criticism..as i never went to College or University I haven't a clue why you would need your own Championship ? So why do you need your own Championship ? There never seems to be much hype about it afterwards the few times it has happened. Then again it never seems to get hyped up before it either. As MTBs master of Propaganda I just need to understand what I'll be promoting..I take it, its less an individual thing and more a " My College is better than your college" bear in mind that watching this is as close to college as i got !

You have got it exactly richie its to say my college is better than your college. Come on lads its only 30 min from all the dublin colleges and a slow lap is only 45 min. It wont interupt your studying. Need it to work this year and we can fine tune it for next year as there will be loads more time!
Ha its all about putting one over your local college, there are intervarsity races for nearly every other sport so why not MTBing. And in terms of this years one being on over exams time, we only got the ball moving 2weeks ago on this whole issue so it would not have been practical to hold it in early April, and teaming up with the Dublin Blitz helps us get going for this year, Next year we can hold it abit earlier if thats what the masses want! Although as Vinnie says, its only a 45min spin and its handy for any of the Dublin colleges.
Also, its not unusual for intervarsities to be this late, The Athletics track and field are being held the weekend before this up in Belfast and they are a two day event, with a big pissup at the end! Well worth the spin up for a break from study for the weekend!

are you going to run this as part of the Blitz eg are you just going to place it as 1st Student across the line , etc.
Wouldn;t be better to run it before the main race as a stand alone event. Now I would imagine that Students entering this would be of differing ages and experiences and for some it would be an easy win and put off future student participation.
I know from experience that the Intervarsitie events in the past have been a joke because everybody knows who is going to win.
I suggest you make it open only to entries for people who are not in the NPS.
After all you want to appeal to the overall student, not the semi pros like Scrivo..let him enter but handicap him.
Theres no need to Handicap Tom Heavey or Darragh Maloney unless its making Tom wear pants or show pictures of girls to Maloney ..
You could appeal to a huge group of first time MTB racers but you'll have to de-banger it.
UL have a huge Student MTB CLub..kick them up the hole and make them enter..otherwise they'll stay down in the bog playing Dungeons and Dragons and talking about sex and reading mtbwipeyourarsewiththis Mag !

Agreed, I think the format needs to be considered. However, are people over estimating the number of student mountain bikers? Out of 15,000 students in Trinity, there are maybe 6 racers and 3 of them are in DH. It's sad to say but students, like underage, don't want to be participating in what is a pretty full on sport.
Intervarsities are more than a 'my college is better than yours' competition though. The college authorities love to hear about their students winning them as they can put them in prospectus, adds to college world ratings etc. It's also a deciding factor when picking what clubs get how much of the available funding. If it wasn't for the smaller clubs hosting intervastities like these, the whole lot would be going to rowing, rugby, football etc!

This is the best place to promote any event..but people need motivation and a reason to do it..
I heard some lad with half a beard and a battered Charles Bukowski paperback say to some scaldy young one wearing impossible glasses , that UCD had much better technical riders than DCU..
Imagine my horror !!
I can only say that theres some amount of Students out there buying mtbs.
And not crap ones either !!!
This is my problem as a promoter , no other forum is going to get the traffic that this one does and nobody gets their posts read more than me..yes I have scientists that work this out for me.
This is the best place to promote any event..but people need motivation and a reason to do it..
I heard some lad with half a beard and a battered Charles Bukowski paperback say to some scaldy young one wearing impossible glasses , that UCD had much better technical riders than DCU..

hey Im a student and just getting into the bike thing and i like it... Is a hardtail ok, how is the race won? does everybody set off at the same time or is it a time trial? how many you expecting?
